Dell Digital Jukebox - Digital player - HDD 15 GB - WMA, MP3 - display: 2.3" Review by Anisha

I bought one of these a few years ago, right before they stopped making the 15gb and started making the new slimmer 20gb and 5gb models. The dj was great, it was easy to use could hold thousands of songs, and also data files. i once even uploaded a movie onto it so i could transfer to one computer to another (though i couldn't transfer it cuz i didn't have the software for the dj installed on the other computer). The voice recorder was also a great feature and it has a great battery life. It works with dell jukebox but also comes with its own explorer program (kinda like windows explorere) which i preferred to use. The only problems with the jukebox was that it was bulky, the headphones stopped working and that it occasionally froze. For the freezing problem, there's a little hole with a reset button on the side, however once I used a pin to press the button and the button fell inside the player so i couldn't press it and had to call dell customer service, they were very friendly and helpful as usual and sent me another player (refurbished) in just a few days (and i called on a Saturday morning, got it tuesday morning) i expected to have to send in my old one and wait weeks for them to try and fix it and expected to have to pay but it was free, once i got my new one i just put my old one in the box stuck the provided shipping label on it and called DHL to come pick it up. A few months ago, I caught the ipod bug, they're were so sleek and slim and made my dj look even bulkier than usual. So I gave into temptation and bought the ipod video (30gb). I was immediately disappointed. yes, it was tiny and shiny. i like that i can check my reflection on the back when i don't have a mirror on me. it was nice to get my name engraved on it for free (but you can't return it if its been engraved) but it wasn't as easy to use, for one thing you have to use the click wheel to search for songs, if u want to hear a song thats starts with W, you have through scroll through all the songs from A-V first which is really annoying if you have thousands of songs. On the DJ, you can search for the first letter of the song. You add to songs on your playlists or name your playlist on the player itself, you have to turn on your computer and open up the itunes software (which isn't as easy to use as dell explorer). To charge it, you have to plug it into your usb 2.0 (not 1.0) and turn on your computer whereas the dell can be plugged into an outlet. The battery life isn't as long as the dell's but the battery only died on me once but then again I harldly ever use my ipod cause I don't like it much. Yes, the ipod can store your photos but I already have my photos stored on my computer and on an online album and I carry my camera around so I didn't really need to have it on my ipod. the ipod can play videos but I don't want to pay $1.99 for one episode of a tv show or a 15 min short film. i tried transfering one of the movies on my computer onto the ipod, itunes was able to convert the mpg file to an ipod compatible file however no sound played cuz it didn't support the type of audio file that the movie had. anyway, videos drain the battery power. the ipod has games, and you can put a calendar and phone book on it but i never bother with those features, i have them on my cell phone already. So bascially i feel i've wasted about $300 bucks on the ipod, i should have just stuck with my dell especially now that I use my dj more than my ipod cuz its very handy for recording my summer class lectures. The ipod, doesn't record. The DJ is also a very good value for its price. It costs about as much as the 5gb dj, ipod minis, and ipod nanos but holds 5x more than they do. So if you don't mind the size and the occasional freezing, the dell dj 15 gb is the best mp3 player out there.

Dell Digital Jukebox - Digital player - HDD 15 GB - WMA, MP3 - display: 2.3" Review by H. Navarro "Noblevictor" (Chicago. IL)

"Digital Jukebox" ~ Generation I: Discontinued 02/2006
To utilize this device must have a PC Operating System with Windows XP and SP2 in addition to Windows Media Player 10 (these are exclusive requirements).

Unfortunately for the Digital Jukebox model there are no Firmware and no Microsoft Playforsure configuration upgrades, {however, the Drivers and Download support are available for a ~ "Generation II DELL Pocket DJ" series, these upgradable models will work with any Microsoft OS}.

The Digital Jukebox Firmware HDD/ Version: 1.20.03, A02 "requires" ~ Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) Setup.exe File R74224.EXE ~ a crucial installation available at the navigable "Dell Drivers and Download support" web page. The R74224.EXE 24MB download bundle provides up to date DELL Digital and DJ drivers including DELL Explorer and the Media player Musicmatch Jukebox (this Musicmatch is useless) although it can be uninstall because the DELL Digital Jukebox works just fine with WMP 10.

Pros:

* Awesome audio compared to GEN II
* Cool Blue back lit LCD screen/ Black Text
* Album/ Artist/ Song/ Genre/ Playlist, selections
* Multiple audio modes
* Multiple playback modes
* Scroll and click barrel navigation
* Wall power charger (great because I hate USB charging)
* Surprisingly long battery life
* Adjustable turn off idle time

Cons:

I bought a refurbished DELL "Digital Jukebox" by mistake and since it wasn't defective I'm stuck and have no choice but to make the best of it. My disappointment is that the DELL Digital Jukebox ~ Gen I ~ isn't an upgradable MP3 player; also I'm not fond of utilizing the limited functions of WMP 10; Synchronization is about half the speed compared to GEN II.

Thus far haven't had any bad experiences; in any case although no longer a top of the line Media player it's comparatively still a tough Clydesdale with impressive presence in harnessing.

Dell Digital Jukebox - Digital player - HDD 15 GB - WMA, MP3 - display: 2.3" Review by Just B. Cause "UFO" (Hershey, PA)

I've owned and used this mp3 player for many years and it has served me well. It was one of the early MP3 players. The sound is good, the hardware seems very durable and the battery life has remained very good. Storage size is also pretty good (about twice my ipod shuffle). I like this better than my shuffle because you can create and store playlists. The drawbacks: heavy. syncing songs and playlists is not as simple as the more modern devices where you can just drag and drop songs and playlists. I use Media Monkey software to manage my music on my PC and I have a lot of trouble trying to sync it with this Dell device(though monkey syncs easily with the shuffle). I finally gave up and now use only the Dell jukebox software to sync this Dell device, and it is more reliable. (but sort of slow).
This seems like a diehard device and might be good if you want an inexpensive "beater" mp3 player that could get knocked around, you don't care if something happens to it, and you don't plan to be syncing it alot to move music around.
